Can Deleted Photos Be Recovered From an iPhone?
Yes — deleted iPhone photos can often be recovered by specialists, even after the Recently Deleted folder has been emptied.

How iOS Handles Photo Deletion
Understanding how iOS deletes photos is essential to understanding why recovery is often still possible — and why time is critical.
Step 1: Moving to Recently Deleted
When you delete a photo in the iOS Photos app, it moves to the Recently Deleted folder. The photo is not gone — it simply has a flag marking it for deletion. It remains fully accessible in this folder for 30 days, after which iOS automatically removes it permanently.
Step 2: Emptying Recently Deleted
When photos are removed from Recently Deleted (either manually or automatically after 30 days), iOS marks the storage blocks on the NAND chip as "available for reuse." Critically, it does not immediately overwrite the data. The photo data remains on the chip until those storage blocks are needed for new data.
Step 3: NAND Overwriting
As you continue using your phone — taking new photos, downloading apps, receiving messages — iOS gradually fills the "available" blocks with new data. Once a block is overwritten with new data, the deleted photo in that block is permanently gone. This is why stopping device usage immediately after accidental deletion dramatically improves recovery chances.
Where Are iPhone Photos Stored?
All photos on your iPhone are stored on the internal NAND flash memory chip in a database format. The Photos app organises and displays these files, but the underlying data lives directly on the chip.
Our specialists access the NAND chip directly, bypassing the Photos app database. This allows us to scan the raw storage for deleted photo data that is no longer referenced in the app's database but may still physically exist on the chip.
Photos App Database
When a photo is "deleted," the Photos app removes its entry from the database. But removing the database entry doesn't erase the actual image data from the chip — it just removes the reference to it.
Raw NAND Access
Specialist tools scan the raw chip data independent of the iOS filesystem, looking for image file signatures — JPEG headers, HEIC signatures, video codecs. Photos found this way can be recovered even when completely absent from the Photos app.
When Can Deleted Photos Be Recovered?
Recovery probability depends primarily on how much the device has been used since deletion, and whether iCloud backup or sync was enabled.
Photos deleted recently, device not used much since
Best case for recovery. The deleted blocks are likely still intact. Bring the device in immediately and stop using it until recovery is complete.
Recently Deleted folder still contains the photos
You don't need us yet — check this folder first. Photos remain there for 30 days and can be restored directly in the Photos app at no cost.
Photos deleted and device used moderately since
Partial recovery is likely. Some photos will have been overwritten but many may still be intact. Worth attempting recovery.
iCloud Photo Library enabled at time of deletion
Check iCloud.com first — photos may be in iCloud's 30-day Recently Deleted. If already purged from iCloud, device-level recovery depends on local NAND state.
Photos deleted months ago, heavy device usage since
Lower probability but still worth assessing. We've recovered photos from devices used heavily for months. Free assessment determines viability.
When Recovery May Not Be Possible
The deleted storage blocks have been fully overwritten by new data from continued device usage
A factory reset was performed after deletion — this makes recovery significantly harder, though still sometimes possible
The photos were deleted through a secure erase process that actively overwrites data
Our No Data No Fee guarantee means you only pay when we successfully recover your photos.
Why Professional Recovery Beats DIY Methods
Using the phone while looking for recovery apps
Every action you take on the phone — browsing, taking photos, using apps — potentially overwrites deleted data. The search for a recovery solution can destroy the very data you're trying to recover.
Consumer recovery software
Most consumer iOS recovery tools have limited access to raw NAND data. They rely on iOS providing access, which means they can't find data that iOS has already marked as deleted. They also write to the device during operation, potentially overwriting recoverable data.
iCloud restore
Restoring from an iCloud backup may help if the photos were in the backup, but it replaces everything on your phone with the backup state — losing any data created after the backup was made.
Waiting to decide
Every day of continued phone use reduces recovery chances. If you're unsure, the safest action is to stop using the device and contact us for a free assessment — making a decision costs nothing.
Our Deleted Photo Recovery Process
Free Assessment
We evaluate deletion timing, device usage since, and backup status to determine recovery probability upfront.
NAND Analysis
Our tools perform a deep scan of the NAND chip, searching for deleted image file signatures independent of the iOS filesystem.
Photo Extraction
Identified photo data is extracted and reconstructed. We recover everything recoverable — even partial files may be usable.
Delivery
Recovered photos are delivered on USB or via secure transfer. You only pay if we succeed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can deleted photos be recovered from an iPhone after the Recently Deleted folder is emptied?
Possibly — this is where professional recovery differs from what an average user can do. iOS marks the storage space as available when you empty Recently Deleted, but doesn't immediately overwrite the data. If that space hasn't been used for new data, specialist tools can still read the remnants. Time and device usage are the critical factors.
How long ago were the photos deleted? Does it matter?
Yes — timing is very important for deleted photo recovery. The longer ago photos were deleted and the more the device has been used since, the lower the probability of recovery. Acting quickly gives the best chance. However, we have successfully recovered photos deleted many months ago in cases where the storage hadn't been heavily overwritten.
Can you recover photos deleted from iCloud?
iCloud has its own 30-day Recently Deleted folder accessible at iCloud.com. If photos were in iCloud and deleted less than 30 days ago, you may be able to restore them yourself. If they're gone from iCloud entirely, recovery depends on whether the originals were still on the device at some point. We assess each case individually.
What types of deleted photos can be recovered?
We can potentially recover photos in any format that was stored on the device: standard photos, Live Photos, videos, screenshots, photos received in messages, and photos saved from apps. The recovery process accesses the raw NAND storage, not just the Photos app, so even photos removed by app deletions or factory resets may be recoverable.
